When your Mac sleeps mid-Claude Code

Claude Code works in long agentic loops: it edits files, runs your test suite, waits on tool calls, and thinks between steps. A lot of that time the CPU is barely busy, so macOS decides you are idle and slips into sleep. The agent is mid-plan, the terminal session drops, and you lose the run you were waiting on. Reading model responses or reviewing a diff without touching the keyboard is enough to trigger it.

AwakeMate keeps it awake while Claude Code runs

AwakeMate watches for the claude process and keeps your Mac awake the whole time it is running. Claude Code is installed via npm, so without Deep CLI detection macOS just reports it as node; Deep CLI detection (on by default) reads the real script name and recognises it correctly.

Detected process: claude

Tip: leave "Sleep when tools go idle" off

Leave "sleep when tools go idle" OFF for Claude Code. The agent spends long stretches waiting on the model and on your approval, so idle sleep would cut a run short exactly when it looks quiet but is not finished.

Will my Mac sleep while Claude Code is thinking or waiting for approval?

No. With idle sleep left off, AwakeMate keeps the Mac awake the entire time the claude process is running, including the quiet stretches where it is waiting on the model or on you.

Claude Code shows up as "node" in Activity Monitor. Will AwakeMate still catch it?

Yes. Deep CLI detection (on by default) reads the underlying script name, so an npm-installed Claude Code is recognised as claude rather than a bare node process.

Does AwakeMate change my energy settings or send my prompts anywhere?

No. It uses the same gentle IOKit power assertion as caffeinate, prevents idle sleep only, and never touches your saved energy settings. It reads only short process names on-device, with no telemetry.

What is the best way to keep my Mac awake while Claude Code runs?

The simplest way is to let AwakeMate watch for it. Add claude to your tools once and AwakeMate keeps the Mac awake automatically for as long as the agent is running, then releases the hold when it exits - no command to remember, no babysitting. Because Claude Code installs through npm and often shows up as node, Deep CLI detection reads the real script name so the right process is recognised. It is the per-tool, set-and-forget version of staying awake.

Can I just use caffeinate or set sleep to Never instead of AwakeMate for Claude Code?

You can, but both are manual and all-or-nothing. caffeinate claude ... works only if you remember to wrap every run, and setting Energy Saver to Never keeps the Mac awake for everything, not just Claude Code, until you remember to switch it back. Neither knows when the agent actually starts or stops, and neither gives you idle-aware sleep or a notch status. AwakeMate uses the same gentle IOKit assertion as caffeinate, but automatically and scoped to just this tool.

Why does my Mac keep falling asleep while Claude Code is still working?

Because Claude Code is quiet for long stretches - waiting on the model, waiting on your approval, thinking between steps - and macOS reads that low activity as you being idle, so it sleeps on its idle timer even though the run is not finished. AwakeMate holds the Mac awake the whole time the claude process is alive, so those pauses no longer end your session early.

Will it keep my Mac awake for Claude Code with the lid closed, even on battery?

Yes. Turn on "Keep awake with the lid closed" in Settings - Options and approve the one-time helper; AwakeMate then keeps the Mac awake with the lid shut while Claude Code runs, and dims the built-in screen so it is not draining the battery under the lid. It works on most Apple Silicon Macs (Apple forces sleep on some, so close your lid once to confirm). It works on battery too, but real work drains it faster, so keep it on power for long runs. See how it works.
